10 tips to focus on:

  • Read the passage first without panicking
Get a general idea of what the writer is saying before looking at the questions.

  • Work out the writer’s main argument
Ask yourself: What is the writer’s opinion or message? This helps with many questions.

  • Read the question carefully
Check what it’s asking you to do—explain, analyse, summarise, or evaluate.

  • Use your own words whenever possible
Unless the question asks for a quotation, paraphrase the passage clearly.

  • Use short quotes when analysing
For word choice or imagery questions, quote only the key word or phrase, then explain its effect.

  • Explain the effect, not just the technique
Don’t just name a technique—say how it helps the writer’s point or affects the reader.

  • Pay attention to the marks
One clear point per mark keeps your answers focused and avoids wasting time.

  • Tackle summary questions carefully
Cover the correct section of the passage and use concise points in your own words.

  • If a question seems hard, move on
Answer easier questions first, then return with a calmer mindset.

  • Leave time to check your answers
Make sure you’ve answered everything fully and clearly—no half answers!
